FACTS ABOUT “LOW-COST” SPAY/NEUTER CLINICS

Why shouldn’t I have my dog spayed at the low-cost place? Isn’t a spay just a spay?

Well, if you are just talking about the surgical removal of your pets' reproductive organs, then yes, a spay or neuter here is the same as a spay or neuter anywhere else. however, that is where the similarities between our services and the so-called "low cost" places ends. Low-cost veterinary clinics all operate on the same model: high-volume assembly lines. While this kind of efficiency is certainly great in many industries, and plays an important role in reducing the pet overpopulation problem by services indigent populations, it may not be the kind of care that you want for your animal.

Here’s how our surgeries differ from the “low-cost” type of clinics:

Tuscawilla Oaks Animal Hospital

ACME "Low Cost" Vet Clinic

full physical examination by a veterinarian on each pet prior to surgery, to make sure your pet is healthy enough to undergo the procedure.

A brief exam, or possibly no examination performed prior to surgery. The first time the vet will likely see your pet is when they are about to make the incision.

Pre-anesthestic bloodwork performed prior to surgery, again to make sure your pet is well enough to undergo anesthesia.

Bloodwork not performed- Subclinical kidney and liver problems, anemia, and infections can go undetected.

An intravenous (IV) catheter is placed, to ensure we have immediate IV access in case of an emergency

No intravenous catheter placed- In the case of an anesthetic emergency, the support staff will be struggling to find a vein.

Anesthestic protocol tailored to your pet’s individual needs

One-size-fits-all anesthestic protocols- which may not be appropriate for your pet’s breed or individual health conditions

Dedicated vital sign monitoring both by electronic equipment and by a trained technician during the surgery.

Typically no monitoring of pet’s vitals during surgery.

Pain medication administered before your pet wakes up.

Pain medication rarely if ever administered.

Monitoring of your pet until they are fully recovered from anesthesia.

Mass recovery of surgery patients- typically one technician monitoring several to dozens of pets, if any monitoring is performed at all.

Anti-inflammatory and pain medication sent home with you, to keep your pet comfortable following surgery

No analgesics sent home with you.

A veterinarian on-call 24 hours a day, available to answer any post-surgery questions or concerns you may have.

No one available to answer your calls- any emergency means a trip to the overnight emergency clinic.

FACTS ABOUT “LOW-COST” VACCINE CLINICS

Aren’t all vaccines the same? Can’t I save some money by having them done by a “low-cost” vaccine clinic?

While vaccines are an important part of your annual visit, they are actually just one small part of keeping your pet healthy and happy. Our annual visits also include a full physical examination, fecal check for intestinal parasites, heartworm examination, a complimentary pet ID card and a complimentary nail trim. We also strongly recommend annual wellness bloodwork, which gives us a comprehensive look into your pet’s overall health.
